Body As Sahara (2015)

Moving image & sound

"Body As Sahara" sees the artist's body become a landscape. Using sand, the artist's body is seen literally as the Sahara Desert - the sand falling down the folds and rolls of Gaafar's fat body mimics the Sahara's undulating sand dunes. Gaafar challenges the impressions of their feminine, fat body, and apotheosizes their own being whilst simultaneously celebrating their connection to earth and their home country of Egypt. At the time, Gaafar was researching the works of Cuban artist Ana Mendieta, whose body and earth sillhouette performances greatly impacted Gaafar's practice.
